I bought three Crescent in a similar condition, all very corroded. The restoration follows the standard route but special note is made here of the detail work. Some of the detail is lost to corrosion and special care is needed to enhance or create detail. Making the most of the existing detail will distract the eye and taking away some existing metal to recreate lines will help. A good paint job will mask some of the poor areas but nothing beats good preparation. It is also hard to see what the finished work will look like but an early coat of primer will reveal how well the preparation has gone.
This one started with removal of the base and axles and a good sandblasting removed much of the oxidation.
Small grinding bits were used to clean up the metal and wire wool to finish.
Metal based epoxy was used to fill the imperfections and this was filed and then smoothed with wet and dry paper.
Some more filler was used to finish before spraying on the first primer coat.
There were a few more additions of primer and filler. The unfortunate thing is that there was a lot lost to the corrosion and the air ducts have been lost particularly in the exhaust area. I may attempt to replace them in some way but now I am tempted to more with the brush after a few top coats.
More to follow.
